The Architectural and Spiritual Harmony of the Abbey

The abbey church of Boscodon Abbey bears witness to the artistic and spiritual wealth as well as the expertise of its Chalaisian builders.

Oriented towards the rising sun, it is laid out according to a rigorous plan in the shape of a Latin cross, with a flat chevet at the 'head' of the church, the most sacred space, the sanctuary.

Architectural elements such as the doubleaux, buttresses, keystones, laminars and shore stones, offer exceptional aesthetics to the abbey church, harmonizing the forms combining simplicity and elegance.

The abbey church also houses two small side chapels on either side of the choir as well as the chapel of Saint-Firmin, at the end of the southern arm of the transept, built on a primitive chapel dedicated to Saint-Marcellin.

The stone used to build the abbey, the cargneule, was extracted from a nearby quarry. The oxidation of the cargneule has given the stones variations in tone and color, which gives a unique charm to the exterior facades of the building.

Despite the many challenges it has endured over time, Boscodon Abbey has remained virtually intact, preserving its exceptional character. The stones contain hidden messages and symbols just waiting to be discovered and interpreted, offering visitors a rich and mysterious experience during guided tours.
