The lay brothers' wing: destruction, transformation and heritage; from the abbey to museography

The wing south of the cloister was once dedicated to the lay monks, those responsible for manual labor and secular tasks. Upstairs was their dormitory, while the ground floor housed the refectory and kitchen. However, this wing was completely destroyed at the end of the 14th century.

In the 15th century, the monks enclosed this space with a simple wall, against which the southern gallery of the cloister now adjoined. The refectory and kitchen were then moved to the southern part of the monks' wing, on the site of the former scriptorium.

Today, on the site of the former refectory, a modern room has been converted to house a museum. This allows visitors to discover the art of 12th-century builders, shedding light on the trades and skills of the medieval artisans who participated in the construction of the abbey.
