The abbey was built in the 12th century by monks from Chalais. The Chalais Monastery is located in the commune of Voreppe in the Isère department.

The monks chose to settle in Boscodon for several reasons: the pre-existence of a chapel, the possibility of exploiting wood from the forest and stone from the quarries, the proximity of the torrents.
To ensure subsistence, a forge, oven, mill, sawmill, stables, but also gardens, cultivated land, meadows and pastures extend around the abbey.
Finally, it should be remembered that in the 12th century, monks from here and elsewhere advocated a return to the desert, seeking to get as far away from the world as possible, especially in the mountains, like here in Boscodon. The place called 'Boscodon' takes its name from its geographical location: bosc , wood and dunum which means height.
It was in this place that the Chalais monks initiated the construction of the monastery with the abbey church.
