It is not uncommon for two celestial bodies – stars or planets – to line up with the Earth. What can we observe in such cases? Depending on their apparent sizes, the more distant object may disappear – that is, be eclipsed – but it may also be only partially obscured. On 12 August, there will be a solar eclipse… so we need to be prepared. This will be the subject of the talk, but it will also cover other alignments that are just as remarkable and indeed very useful.
